World Cup 2026 Corner : Canada Win Big but Lose Kone

Canada recorded a massive victory in their second Group B match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after thrashing nine-man Iraq 6-0 at BC Place in Vancouver. However, the emphatic win came at a heavy cost for Les Rouges, as midfielder Ismaël Koné suffered a leg fracture that has ruled him out for the remainder of the tournament.

Canada Tear Iraq Apart Amid Kone's Heartbreak

After being held to a draw by Bosnia in their opening fixture, Jesse Marsch's side were determined to secure all three points against the Lions of Mesopotamia. Canada adopted an aggressive attacking approach from the start, and their positive play paid off in the 16th minute when Cyle Larin opened the scoring.

Jonathan David doubled Canada's advantage in the 29th minute, putting Les Rouges firmly in control of the contest.

The match swung even further in Canada's favour when Iraq were reduced to 10 men after Homam Ahmed was sent off for bringing down an opponent as the last defender. Marsch's men took full advantage of the numerical superiority, with David scoring his second goal of the evening before half-time to make it 3-0.

Things went from bad to worse for Iraq after the break. Assim Madibo received a straight red card following a dangerous tackle on Koné, reducing Julen Lopetegui's side to just nine men.

Unfortunately for Canada, the incident also resulted in a devastating setback. Koné suffered a broken tibia and fibula from the challenge and has officially been ruled out for the remainder of the World Cup. The injury overshadowed an otherwise memorable night for the host nation.

Rather than slowing down, Les Rouges responded by raising their intensity even further. Nathan Saliba added Canada's fourth goal before an own goal from Mohammed Manai made it 5-0. David then completed his hat-trick in stoppage time to cap off a memorable evening in Vancouver.

The emphatic victory could prove crucial not only in Canada's bid to secure qualification for the knockout stage but also in the race to finish top of Group B. Les Rouges now sit joint-top with Switzerland on four points, with the two sides set to meet in a decisive final group-stage showdown.

Match Notes

Canada

  • Jesse Marsch's side finally showed the clinical finishing they lacked in their opening match, and they will hope to maintain that efficiency in the knockout race.
  • Losing Ismaël Koné for the remainder of the tournament due to a leg fracture is a major blow, meaning Marsch must quickly identify the right replacement in midfield.

Iraq

  • Lopetegui's men once again struggled to impose themselves on the match and were heavily punished for their mistakes.
  • Iraq must improve their defensive discipline and organization after finishing with nine men and committing several reckless fouls throughout the contest.
