World Cup 2026 Corner: Mbappe's Double Help France Beat Senegal

France started their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in the best possible fashion after defeating Senegal 3-1. Les Bleus star forward Kylian Mbappe once again showcased his world-class quality by scoring a brace to lead his side to a valuable opening victory.

France Beat Senegal 3-1 With a Brace From Mbappe

Heading into the tournament as one of the favorites, Les Bleus were eager to demonstrate their quality against one of Africa's strongest sides. However, it proved far from an easy encounter, as Senegal produced a disciplined and competitive performance, particularly during the opening 45 minutes.

Despite enjoying plenty of attacking talent throughout their squad, France struggled to find a breakthrough before halftime as Senegal remained compact and organized defensively.

Didier Deschamps' men eventually broke the deadlock midway through the second half when Kylian Mbappe found the back of the net with a composed finish to put France ahead.

Les Bleus doubled their advantage in the 82nd minute through Bradley Barcola, whose clinical effort appeared to put the result beyond doubt.

Senegal briefly gave themselves hope when Ibrahim Mbaye pulled a goal back with a lovely strike late in the match. However, Mbappe quickly extinguished any chance of a comeback by scoring his second goal just a minute later with a powerful finish to seal France's victory.

The win places France in a strong position as they pursue qualification for the knockout stages. Meanwhile, Senegal now face a more difficult path and will need positive results in their remaining fixtures against Norway and Iraq.

Match Notes

France

  • Les Bleus delivered a solid overall performance, although they can certainly improve their first-half display in upcoming matches.
  • Didier Deschamps' side should also work on maintaining their defensive concentration after conceding late in a game that appeared to be under control.

Senegal

  • The African outfit will need to improve their defensive organization and concentration as they prepare to face more dangerous attacking threats in their next matches.
  • On paper, Senegal's upcoming clash against Norway could be decisive, as another defeat would seriously damage their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
