World Cup 2026 Corner: Ronaldo's Brace Leads Portugal Past Uzbekistan

Portugal finally secured their first win of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after cruising to a 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan. Cristiano Ronaldo silenced his critics with a brace as the Selecao das Quinas collected three important points to keep their qualification hopes firmly on track.

Ronaldo's Brace Leads Portugal to Victory Over Uzbekistan

After opening their campaign with a draw against DR Congo, Portugal knew that only a win would do against Uzbekistan. Roberto Martinez's side immediately took control of the match and were rewarded after just six minutes when Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring.

Portugal continued to dominate proceedings and doubled their lead in the 17th minute through a superb free-kick from Nuno Mendes. The Selecao das Quinas remained relentless and went into the break with a commanding 3-0 advantage after Ronaldo completed his brace on the 39-minute mark, finishing off a fine assist from Bruno Fernandes.

Portugal maintained their attacking intensity in the second half and added two more goals. An own goal from Abduvohid Nematov made it 4-0 before Rafael Leao completed the scoring with a late strike three minutes from time.

The convincing victory moves Portugal into second place in Group K with four points from two matches. They sit behind Colombia, who secured qualification after a 1-0 victory over DR Congo to move onto six points.

Portugal now need at least a draw against Colombia in their final group match to secure a place in the knockout stage. A victory would see Martinez's side finish as Group K winners.

As for Uzbekistan, the defeat effectively ends their World Cup campaign after back-to-back losses. DR Congo, meanwhile, still have a chance of advancing if they can defeat the White Wolves in their final group game.

Match Notes

Portugal

Portugal showed significant improvement in their attacking play and looked far more fluid in possession, which helped them convert their chances more effectively.

Martinez's side must continue to improve their attacking combinations while maintaining their defensive organization ahead of tougher challenges.

Uzbekistan

This World Cup campaign should provide valuable lessons for the White Wolves as they continue their development on the international stage.

Uzbekistan can still end their tournament on a positive note by producing a strong performance against DR Congo in their final group match.
