World Cup 2026 Corner: Switzerland Beat Bosnia as Manzambi's Brace Keeps Knockout Hopes Alive

Switzerland finally secured their first victory of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Bosnia 4-1 in their second group-stage match. Substitute Johan Manzambi emerged as the hero for the A-Team, scoring twice in the second half to guide Murat Yakin's side to an important three points.

Switzerland Beat Bosnia as Manzambi Scored a Brace

Both Switzerland and Bosnia entered the match eager to claim maximum points after drawing their respective opening group fixtures.

Murat Yakin's men were left frustrated after failing to capitalize on numerous chances against Qatar, and they were determined to make amends in their second outing of the tournament.

However, it proved to be another tightly contested affair.

Both sides prioritized defensive solidity during the opening 45 minutes, resulting in a goalless first half with very few clear-cut opportunities.

After the restart, Switzerland gradually began to take control of the match. Their breakthrough finally arrived in the 74th minute through substitute Johan Manzambi, who made an immediate impact after coming off the bench.

Bosnia's task became even more difficult six minutes later when Tarek Muharemovic received a red card, forcing the Dragons to play the remainder of the match with ten men.

Switzerland quickly took advantage of their numerical superiority. Ruben Vargas doubled the A-Team's lead in the 84th minute before Manzambi completed his brace six minutes later to seemingly put the game beyond doubt.

Bosnia managed to pull one goal back through Ermin Mahmic's strike, but Switzerland had the final say when Granit Xhaka converted a late penalty to seal an emphatic 4-1 victory.

The result puts Switzerland in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages, although they still have one crucial group match remaining against host nation Canada.

Match Notes

Switzerland

  • Murat Yakin's side finally showed the clinical finishing that cost them all three points against Qatar in their opening match.
  • However, Switzerland could still improve by taking control of matches much earlier instead of waiting until the second half to impose themselves.
  • There will certainly be discussion over whether Johan Manzambi deserves a place in the starting lineup or should continue to thrive in his role as a super-sub.

Bosnia

  • The Dragons produced a disciplined first-half display but gradually lost control of the match, especially after conceding the opening goal.
  • Edin Dzeko and his teammates will need to regain their focus and concentration in their final group match against Qatar to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.
