World Cup 2026 Corner: Wasteful Switzerland Shockingly Held by Qatar

Switzerland failed to secure all three points in their opening fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after being held to a 1-1 draw by Qatar. Murat Yakin's side were unable to capitalize on their dominance as a late equalizer from the Maroons forced both teams to settle for a point in Group B.

Dominant Switzerland Stunned by Qatar's Late Equalizer

Tipped by many as the favorites to top Group B, Switzerland made a strong start against Julen Lopetegui's Qatar. The Nati's positive approach was eventually rewarded in the 17th minute when Breel Embolo calmly converted from the penalty spot to hand his side a deserved lead.

The early breakthrough further enhanced Switzerland's control over the match, forcing Qatar to sit deep and rely mainly on sporadic counterattacks.

Despite their dominance, however, the Swiss were unable to put the game beyond their opponents. A combination of poor finishing and a lack of composure in front of goal proved costly for Yakin's men.

Switzerland continued to create opportunities throughout the contest, registering more than 25 attempts on goal and forcing Qatari goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada into several impressive saves.

Their inability to kill off the match eventually came back to haunt them.

Late in the second half, Qatar launched another rare counterattack and found an equalizer in fortunate circumstances. Defender Miro Muheim inadvertently headed the ball into his own net while attempting to prevent an opposition player from scoring, bringing the Maroons level against the run of play.

It was a disappointing result for Switzerland considering the amount of control and chances they enjoyed throughout the encounter. To make matters more challenging, Yakin's side now face tougher tests in their remaining group-stage fixtures against Bosnia and Herzegovina and host nation Canada.

Match Notes

Switzerland

  • Switzerland delivered a dominant and disciplined performance, pressing aggressively from the opening whistle. However, their finishing and composure in front of goal require significant improvement.
  • The draw against Qatar should serve as an important lesson for Yakin's men, highlighting the importance of converting chances and putting matches beyond doubt.
  • Unless they become more clinical in attack, the Swiss could struggle to progress deep into the tournament despite their overall quality.

Qatar

  • Earning a point from their opening match should provide a major confidence boost for Qatar, although they cannot rely on similar performances if they hope to advance.
  • Outstanding goalkeeping from Mahmud Abunada and Switzerland's wastefulness masked some of Julen Lopetegui's side's shortcomings in midfield and attack.
  • Qatar must improve their overall level of performance in their remaining matches against Canada and Bosnia if they wish to remain competitive in Group B
