World Cup Corner 2026: Disappointing Portugal Held by DR Congo

Portugal failed to begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in ideal fashion after being held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo. Selecao das Quinas took an early lead but were unable to build on their advantage as the Leopards fought back to earn a historic point.

Favorite Portugal Struggle to Overcome DR Congo

Regarded as one of the tournament favorites, Portugal entered the match determined to showcase their quality against the African side. Roberto Martinez's men made the perfect start and opened the scoring after just six minutes.

Joao Neves rose brilliantly inside the penalty area to head home and give Portugal an early 1-0 advantage.

However, taking the lead did not make life easier for Selecao das Quinas.

Portugal struggled to break down DR Congo's resilient defensive setup and gradually lost control of the match. As confidence grew among the Leopards, Sebastian Desabre's side began to push forward in search of an equalizer.

After causing several problems for Portugal's defense, DR Congo finally found their historic first World Cup goal of the tournament just before halftime. Yoane Wissa met a cross with a powerful header to level the score and stun the Portuguese supporters.

That equalizer ultimately proved to be the final goal of the contest, as neither side managed to find the decisive breakthrough in the second half.

It was undoubtedly a disappointing night for Roberto Martinez's team, including Cristiano Ronaldo, who was unable to add to his World Cup goals tally.

Portugal must now regroup quickly and secure positive results in their remaining group fixtures against Uzbekistan and Colombia, while DR Congo can take enormous confidence from earning a valuable point against one of the competition's favorites.

Match Notes

Portugal

  • Martinez's side started the match brightly but struggled to maintain control and looked vulnerable during defensive transitions.
  • Portugal need to manage games better and improve their defensive focus, particularly when dealing with counter-attacks.

DR Congo

  • The Leopards produced an impressive overall performance and were able to trouble Portugal rather than simply sit back and defend.
  • DR Congo can build on this display, but will still need to improve if they hope to earn positive results against Colombia and Uzbekistan.
