World Cup 2026 Corner : Germany Secure Qualification After Comeback Win vs Ivory Coast
Germany secured their place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following an impressive comeback victory over Ivory Coast. Julian Nagelsmann's side defeated The Elephants 2-1 thanks to two second-half goals from substitute Deniz Undav.
Germany Advance After Beating Ivory Coast
Following their emphatic victory in the opening match, Die Mannschaft were determined to secure another three points against Emerse Faé's side. Germany attempted to control proceedings from the outset, adopting an attacking approach right from kick-off.
However, it was Ivory Coast who struck first. Franck Kessié gave The Elephants the lead in the 30th minute, capitalising on Germany's defensive lapse. The goal stood until half-time, with Germany struggling to find their rhythm in the final third while also finding it difficult to cope with Ivory Coast's physical style of play.
After the break, Nagelsmann introduced several changes, most notably bringing on Deniz Undav to add more sharpness and presence up front. The Stuttgart forward quickly made his impact felt, scoring Germany's equaliser in the 68th minute by finishing off a delightful cross with a superb first-time strike.
Undav completed the comeback in stoppage time with a powerful effort from inside the penalty area. Ivory Coast had little time to mount a response and were forced to accept a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat.
The victory officially secured Germany's place in the knockout stage despite still having one group match remaining against Ecuador. Meanwhile, Ivory Coast will have to seal their qualification hopes in their final group fixture against Curaçao.
Match Notes
Germany
- Die Mannschaft produced a solid performance overall, although Nagelsmann may need to find a better balance when facing more physical opponents.
- Germany struggled in the first half as several starters found it difficult to deal with Ivory Coast's intensity, but the tactical adjustments after the break proved decisive.
- Nagelsmann's men can still improve their finishing and defensive organisation, particularly during transitions.
Ivory Coast
- The Elephants' patient approach worked well for large periods of the match, but it could prove risky against more clinical and physically imposing opponents.
- Ivory Coast should look to improve their attacking play and finishing to maximise the effectiveness of their counter-attacking opportunities.
