World Cup 2026 Corner: Haaland Shines as Norway Thump Iraq 4-2

Erling Haaland marked his FIFA World Cup debut in the best possible fashion by scoring twice to inspire Norway to a 4-1 victory over Iraq. Although it was far from an easy contest, the Vikings eventually pulled away to secure all three points in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Norway Beat Iraq as Haaland Bags a Brace

After producing a convincing campaign during the qualifying stages, Norway arrived at the World Cup determined to prove they belonged among football's elite.

The Scandinavian side started the match on the front foot and were rewarded with the opening goal after 30 minutes of play. Erling Haaland continued his remarkable scoring form by finding the back of the net to put the Vikings ahead.

However, Norway's lead lasted only 10 minutes as Iraq responded brilliantly. Aymen Hussein rose highest to power home a strong header and level the score at 1-1, giving the Lions of Mesopotamia renewed belief.

The parity did not last long, though.

Haaland capitalized on a costly defensive mistake from Iraq's backline to restore Norway's advantage before halftime, ensuring the Vikings entered the break with a 2-1 lead.

Iraq pushed hard in search of another equalizer early in the second half, but Norway maintained their composure and defensive solidity.

Their persistence paid off in the 76th minute when Leo Østigård headed home Norway's third goal to give Ståle Solbakken's side breathing space.

The Vikings capped off their victory in stoppage time thanks to an unfortunate own goal from Aymen Hussein, sealing an impressive 4-1 win.

The result gives Norway a crucial three points ahead of what could be much tougher encounters against Senegal and France, while Iraq will need to regroup quickly if they hope to keep their qualification ambitions alive.

Match Notes

Norway

  • The Vikings delivered a solid overall performance, although there were periods when they allowed Iraq to create too many opportunities.
  • Despite possessing a significant aerial advantage, Norway surprisingly conceded from a header, highlighting the need to improve their defensive focus and positioning in future matches.

Iraq

  • The Lions of Mesopotamia actually performed admirably, but the difference in quality between the two sides ultimately proved decisive.
  • Iraq must maintain their concentration and defensive discipline better, especially in their upcoming fixtures against France and Senegal.
